Hearing Aid Compatibility (HAC) Information

Cellular One of East Central Illinois offers Hearing Aid Compatibility (HAC) rated handsets for our customers using hearing aids.

HAC compliant handsets are marked with M or T ratings:

M refers to the RF emissions level of the handset devices and indicates the device is intended for use with hearing aids in microphone mode.

T refers to the device’s telecoil coupling ability and indicates the device is intended for use with hearing aids in telecoil mode. A telecoil is a small device that is built into some hearing aids for use with the telephone as well as assistive listening devices To use the telecoil, generally either the hearing aid is switched to the “T” position or a button on the hearing aid is pushed to select the telecoil program; some newer hearing aids will automatically switch to telecoil mode when using a phone.

The ratings are used to determine the value of likely interference or immunity of wireless devices in compatibility to hearing devices based on a level of numerical value from 1 to 4. The higher the numerical rating, the more likely the handset can be used with a hearing aid in that particular mode.

The above information is a summary from the CTIA website: http://www.accesswireless.org. Please visit the website for more information.

Explanation of methodology for determining levels of functionality (i.e., operating capabilities, features, prices):

Low-Tier Phones offer basic wireless telephone features, may not have a camera, Bluetooth, or Internet access capability, and generally lack such features as MP3 players and expandable memory. The designs are typically bar or flip for customers using voice or text only.

Mid-Tier Phones may have a camera, Bluetooth or Internet capability, but are less likely to offer video/music/media player capability. The designs are less stylish and tend to be clamshells or flips.

High-Tier Phones have more extensive features, such as Bluetooth, Internet access capabilities, increased storage or expandable memory, high-resolution color display, enhanced camera or video capabilities, and music or MP3 player functionality. The designs are more modern and sleek.

PDA & Smartphones typically have QWERTY or touch keypads and go beyond just making phone calls to including operating systems that allow the phone to run productivity applications and have software that may enable you to create and edit Microsoft Office documents or at least view them, download applications, edit photos, access the web, and more.
